When Should You Replace Your Boiler In Kent

What’s the Average Lifespan of a Boiler?

The average boiler lasts 10-15 years, if it’s been well maintained. Having a yearly service can improve the lifespan of your boiler, but the older it gets the harder your boiler works to heat your home.

Frequent Breakdowns

We understand a new boiler isn’t cheap, but if your boiler is breaking down on the regular that can add up and be expensive too. Its definitely worth getting a free quotation for a new boiler and see whether a new boiler will leave you better off in the long run.

High Energy Bills

Are you noticing that your bills are higher than normal without an explanation? It could be due to the age of your boiler. If your boiler is older it will be less efficient than a new boiler so it will cost you more to run. A new A-rated boiler will save you money in the long run.

Noisy System

Are you noticing that your boiler and radiators are noisier than usual? If you hear a tapping sound on your pipes it could be a sign of sludge build up on your central heating which can be fixed with a power flush. If you are hearing humming, a banging noise or a vibrating sound this could be a sign that the issue is with the boiler rather that the heating system. It’s best to call out a gas safe engineer to diagnose the issue.

Odd Smells

If you start to notice foul smells coming from you boiler resembling rotten eggs you may have a gas leak. In this situation we recommend turning off your boiler immediately, calling the emergency gas line on 0800 111 999 and vacating the property. In this situation you may need your boiler replacing.

Yellow Flame

Your boiler flame light should be always blue but if it changes to a yellow colour it could be a sign of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is dangerous and can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea and dizziness. We recommend getting a gas safe engineer to service your boiler immediately and diagnose the issue.

Water leaks

Your boiler shouldn’t leak water, but if you notice it leaking you should switch it off and have it checked by a gas safe engineer. It may be a valve or a seal that has broken, but left unfixed it could cause damage to your home. It may be able to be repaired but could mean a replacement boiler is needed.

Issues With Parts

Older boiler parts are harder to come by when they need replacing, which can also mean more expensive. If your boiler rarely has issues it may be worth getting it repaired. If your boiler regularly needs parts replacing or if the parts are expensive for instance if the heat exchanger goes on it, it may be more economical getting your boiler replaced.

Low Performance

Are you noticing that your radiators are taking longer to heat up or you are regularly having to to adjust your boiler pressure it would be worth getting a gas safe engineer to investigate to see whether there is a minor issue that is repairable or if its beyond repair.
